DAVLEKANOVO, archaeological sites of Stone and Iron ages. Dated to be from as far back as 17—16th centuries BC. Located in the north east, on the outskirts of the city of Davlekanovo on the left bank of the Dyoma River. Discovered in 1962 by G.I.Matveeva, they were investigated between 1962—69 by G.N.Matyushin, V.S.Stokolos, and E.A.Fyodorova Davydova. 589 m2 have been dug out. It is a multi layered settlement and it includes five sites. D.I, the Mesolithic period site. Such items as bone harpoons, arrowheads, awls, and flint knives were found there. D.II, the Neolithic period site. Its examination revealed a housing pit with 4 hearths. The ceramics found were sharp bottomed vessels with a comb like ornament. There were also found a number of two sided silicon tools, as well as bones of domestic animals and fish. In the eastern parts of the site a grave of a person of male sex was discovered. The deceased was buried crouched on his right side, with his head in the direction to the NW. Based on the burial materials, in 1968 M.M.Gerasimov reconstructed the anthro pological type of the population of the South Urals who lived during the Neolithic period. D.III, the Eneolithic period site. The ceramics found were represented by vessels of the Agidelskaya culture (round  bottomed with a nimbus in the form of a collar). D.IV, the Bronze Age site. The ceramics found were represented by vessels of the Abashevskaya culture (bell shaped with geometric ornaments) and log shaped items (can like form, ornamented with horizontal lines and zigzags). D.V, the Neolithic the early Middle Ages site. In the lower layers of the site, various items made from bone, belonging to the late Neolithic period, were found. In the upper layers, ceramics of the Kushnarenkovskaya culture were located (ref. Archaeological cul tures). The materials are kept in the collections of the Institute of Archaeology of the RAS (Moscow) and the BSU.
