DAHL, Vladimir Ivanovich (10.11.1801, Lugan, Novorossiyskaya Gub. 22.9.1872, Moscow), a Russian Writer, Lexicographer and Ethnographer. Associate Member (1838) of the Department of Natural Sciences, Merited Member (1863) of the Department of Russian Language and Literature Imperial of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Active State Councillor (1858). Laureate of the Lomonosov Award (Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences; 1869), the Heimburger Award (Dorpat University, 1870). Awarded with the Order of St. George, 4th Class (1831), etc. Graduated from the Department of Medicine of Dorpat University (1829). Between 1819–25, in the Russian Navy. Between 1833–61, on state service. In September 1833, accompanied A.S.Pushkin on his trip to Orenburg Gub. through the places associated with Ye.I.Pugachyov. The materials on folklore and ethnography of Bashkirs, Rus­ sians and other peoples, which D. collected in Orenburg Obl., formed the basis of the following D.’s creative works: Hunting for Wolves (1830s), Bashkir Mermaid (paraphrasing of the Zayatulyak and Khyu­ khylu epic; 1843), Mayna (1846), Deceive (1861), Bashkirs. Ethnographic essay, description of the Bashkir people and their way of life (1862), etc. Author of the Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language (in 4 volumes, 1863–1866), which became an important stage in the development of lexicography and lexicology of the Russian language. The dictionary presents the lexicon of the South Urals Russian people as well as the borrowings from the Turkic languages.
