JAZZ

JAZZ, a form of music art. In the early 40s of the 20th century, the arising interest in J. in Bashkortostan was facilitated by the concert and tour activity of the leading pop and jazz bands and musicians of the country. Further development of jazz art is connected with the creative work of large orchestras (big bands) and small ensembles, working at cinemas, restaurants, cultural and educational institutions or in dance areas. In the late 1960s – early 1970s, the ensembles at the restaurants of hotels “Agidel” (leaders — A.G.Ivashchenko, V.Buznik), “Bashkiria” (A.G.Reshetnikov), “Russia” (Buznik), “Tourist” (Yu.I.Shemagonov) were distinguished by high professionalism. The big band of the Sterlitamak Machine Tool Plant (G.A.Kalinin), “Birsky Dixieland” (B.E.Ugolnikov), etc. were widely popular in the Republic. Opening of the Pop Music Department at the Art School in 1974 became the whole new stage in the development of J. Since mid. 80s, the Republic has regularly held jazz concerts, All Union Jazz Festival “Ufa” (1988), International Festival “Jazforum” (1989). The leading jazz bands of the 80s — early 90s: “Dustar” (director — M.Kh. Yuldybayev), “Orlan” (O.H.Kireyev), “Trans Atlantic” (S.G.Chipenko), “Ufa” (D.V.Shapko), etc. The range of developed styles (from dixieland to avant garde) and performers (from soloists to a big band) has expanded. Interesting results in creating an original style based on the material of the Bashk. folklore were achieved by ensembles “Dustar” and “Orlan”. Since late 90s, Ufa hosted jazz festivals: Republican – Children festival “Mr. Jazz”, children and youth festival “Journey to Jazz Land” (both — in 1999), “Jazz and Not Just That” (2000); All Russian Jazz Festival (2004); International — “Pink Panther” (1995), “Jazz Master” (2005). In 1998, a big band was created at the Bashkir Philharmonia under the leadership of G.P.Markorov. In 2006, the Department of Pop and Jazz Music was opened at the UGII. Since 2007, the Ufa Jazz Club has been operating, which has become the center of jazz performance. There is a developing tradition of unique master classes at concerts and jam sessions with the participation of world famous jazz performers touring in Ufa: I.M.Bril, I.M.Butman, A.O.Kroll, O.L.Lundstrem, etc. Composers R.H.Gazizov, R.R. Ziganov, A.T.Karimov, I.I.Hisamutdinov, etc. are using Jazz style in their creative work.
