MALAYA BASHKIRIYA (the lesser Bashkiriya) refers to the original territory of the autonomous Bashkurdistan (Bashkortostan), proclaimed on November 15th 1917, and approved at the 3rd All‑Bashkir Kurultay (Congress) as the first stage of the territorial autonomy implementation. The autonomous Bashkortostan got the name M.B. in January 1918. It comprised the Bashkir territory of Orenburg Gub., Perm (parts of Yekaterinburgsky, Krasnoufimsky, Shadrinsky uyezds), Samara (part of Buzuluksky Uyezd), and Ufa (parts of Zlatoustovsky, Sterlitamaksky and Ufimsky uyezds) guberniyas. In the future, it was planned to attach Western Bashkortostan to M.B. (the Bashkir territory of Osinsky Uyezd of Perm Gub., Bugulminsky Uyezd of Samara Gub., Belebeyevsky, Birsky, Menzelinsky and Ufa uyezds of Ufa Gub.), where the largest number of Bashkir people lived. In 1917, M.B. was divided into Baryntabynsky, Burzyan‑Tangaurovsky, Jitirovsky, IchkinKataysky, Kipchaksky, Kuvakansky, Tamyan‑Kataysky, Tok‑Churansky, and Usergansky cantons, in 1918 — into Argayashsky, Burzyan‑Tangaurovsky, Jitirovsky, Duvansky, Kipchaksky, Kudyeysky, Kushchinsky, Tabynsky, Tamyan‑Kataysky, Tok‑Churansky, Usergansky, Yurmatynsky, and Yalansky Cantons. The autonomy of Bashkortostan within M.B. was approved by The Agreement of the Central Soviet Pow er with the Bashkir Government on the Soviet Autonomous Bashkiria. According to the 1920 census, the area of M.B. was 93,108 km2 with population of 1,249,539 people. In 1922, M.B. became part of Bolshaya Bashkiriya.
