TAGIROV, Afzal Mukhitdinovich [25.10.1890, Derevnya Abdrakhmanovo of Bugulminsky Uyezd of Samara Gub. (Almetyevsky Raion of the RT) – 27.9.1937, Moscow], Statesman, Social Activist, Writer. Merited Master of Soviet Literature and Art of the BASSR (1934). Participant of the First World War and the Civil War. Awarded with the Order of Labour of the Khorezm People’s Republic (1923). Studied at the Mardzaniya (Kazan, 1905–06), Khusayniya (1910–11) madrassas, and at the Communist Academy (Moscow, 1925–27). Since 1920 he worked at The Yukhyldar Huze (A Word of Proletariat, Orenburg) newspaper, since 1921 – at the Samarkand Obl. Committee, between 1922–25 Chairman of the Khorezm Central Committee of the RCP(b), simultaneously, Editor of The Inkilob Kuyashi newspaper. Since 1928, Secretary of the Communist Party Board of the Bashkir Obl. Committee of the CPSU. Since 1931, Chairman of the Bashkir Central Executive Committee, simultaneously, since 1934 – of the BASSR Union of Writers. Since 1936, Dir. of Bashkir RI of Language and Literature. T.’s main research areas are the revolutionary struggle and social rearrangement of life. T. was the first writer in the Bashkir literature who created novels on themes borrowed from history. The Haldattar novel (1933; The Soldiers in the Russian translation of 1934) depicts the events of the First World War and traces the growth of revolutionary self-consciousness of people. The Krasnogvardeytsy (Red Army Officers) (1935; in Bashkir–Kyzylgvardeyetstar, 1936) and the Krasnoarmeytsy (Red Army Soldiers) (1937; in Bashkir – Kyzylarmeyetstar, 1962) novels are both dedicated to the events of the Civil War. T.’s literary works are translated into Russian, Belarusian, Moldavian, Uzbek, Chuvash and other languages. In 1937, he was subjected to political purges and executed by shooting. Rehabilitated in 1956.
