UDMURTS (self‑identified as “Udmurt, Udmort, Ukmort”), a people, the dominant population of the Udm. Republic. In 2010, there were 21.4 thous. U. living in the RB: Yanaul – 2.4 thous. p., Neftekamsk – 1.6 thous., Tatyshlinsky – 5.4 thous., Yanaulsky – 4.3 thous., Kaltasinsky – 2.6 thous. and Buraevsky – 1.7 thousand. In the territory of the of RB there live Zakamskiye U. which are further subdivided into Tatyshli, Knyaz‑Elgin, Bavlin, Tashkichin, Kanlin, Buy and Tanyp ethnic subgroups. The resettlement of U. into the territory of Bashkortostan began in the 1st half of the 17th century. At the end of the 17–18th centuries due to Russia’s policy of total Christianization and persecution of traditional beliefs mass migration of U. into the north‑west regions of Bashkortostan began.

They were mostly involved in agriculture, but they also bred cattle, persued household trades, and foraged for plants. The traditional settlements of U. consisted of a few yards, located along the banks of rivers, had a hectic and linear layouts. The dwellings were 2 chamber 4‑ or 5‑walled log houses with a double‑pitch roof. The cuisine mostly consisted of the products of agriculture, cattle breeding, and plants foraging. Traditional holidays were associated with the agricultural calendar and included Maslenitsa, Harvesting Festivals, etc. There’s the National Cultural Centre of Udmurts of Bashkortostan and the Udmurt Historical and Cultural Centre in the RB. Oshmes (Spring) newspaper is published in the Udmurt language. Udmurt folklore ensembles function.
