CHALIAPIN, Fyodor Ivanovich (1.2.1873, Kazan — 12.4.1938, Paris, in 1984 reburied in Moscow at the Novo‑Devichye cemetery), singer (high bass). People's Artist of the Republic (1918). Between 1890 — 91, he toured in Ufa. On December 18, 1890, he debuted in the hall of the Nobility Assembly building by performing the part of Stolnik (Galka by S.Monyushko). Upon the completion of the theatrical season, he served as a scriber at the Zemstvo Administration of Ufa Gub.; he participated in the plays of the Singing, Music and Drama Art Society, in the charity play in favor of Ufa orphanages, sang in the choir of the Ilyinskaya Church; took the first lessons of professional music from pianist V.D.Parshina. The Ufa period, described by C. in the autobiographical novel The Pages of My Life (1917), marked the beginning of the artistic work and world fame of the singer. Ufa hosts a festival Chaliapin’s Evenings in Ufa (since 1991), Debut Open City Contest of Young Vocalists named after F.I.Chaliapin (since 2000), International Vocalists Contest named after F.Chaliapin (since 2016), there is a branch of the Interregional Chaliapin Centre (since 1992). His monument was erected in Ufa.
