KAKHKAKHA (from Persian – sarcastically laughing) is an evil demon in Bashkir mythology. K. is the tsar of snakes able to turn into anything, a character of the Ural-batyrepic. He has a magical wand which helps him to summon natural catastrophes. He and his son Zarkum try to destroy Ural-batyr. When his kingdom is destroyed, he joins Azraka against Ural batyr and dies in battle. In the Akbuzatepic K. is Idel’s son, Uralbatyr’s grandson. Searching for Akbuzat he descends into Shulgan’s underwater kingdom and falls in love with his daughter. However, Shulgan enchanted him, turned him into a 12headed diyu and called him Kakhkakha. He made him catch beautiful girls for him. Khauban turned K. into a bat for betraying his people. “Dandanbatyr” fairytale shows K. as a diyu that lives over Kaf-tau.
