DESIGN, the creative method and process of functional form making, as well as the field of professional activity, associated with the design of industrial products, furniture, various tools, machines, organiza tion of the object environment and labour processes.
The 20s — early 30s of the 20th century in Bashkortostan became the period of the conception of environmental D. Artists A.P.Lezhnev, G.P.Cherkasheninov, etc were involved in the decoration of streets and squares during holidays. The graphic D. in the decoration of printed publications (ref. Graphics) and in the development of state symbols of the Republic is simultaneously developing. Origination of industrial D. in the 30–50s was caused by the growth of mechanical engineering, industry and construction.
Early 60s — 80s was the period of the creation and development of styling design. E.Gashev, V.V.Kashlachev, V.A.Krasheninnikov, I.H.Nabiyev, G.H.Nabiyev, A.A.Sadretdinov, etc worked in the area of the industrial D. Further development of the industrial D. is connected with the fabrication of electric shavers “Agidel”, rotary cultivators, monitors, snowmobiles by the ODK–Ufa Motor-Building Production Association; electric irons, vacuum cleaner “Raketa” — by Ufa Aggregate Production Association; intercom devices, remote controls for operative communication stations, electric curlers “Aigul’ — by the Bashkir SPA named after S.M.Kirov. The environmental D. in this period found its embodiment in the form of decorative art. The attributes of festive processions are developed, the designs of town space decoration are created. Between the 70—80s, the design and decoration of the interior of the public buildings in the Republic is done by G.V.Gabidullin, V.V.Novikov, V.D.Tkachev, F.U.Usmanova, etc. The D. of clothing and furniture develops. Many artists, representing the various fields of decorative-applied art, make their contribution to the development of the unique object D.
Between the 80s—90s, artists R.M.Abdullin, A.V.Veselov, A.R.Lopakov, A.A.Holopov, A.Z.Sharafutdinov, V.H.Sharafutdinov, etc were engaged in the D. of the exhibition expositions at the VDNKh of the BASSR, USSR, foreign and other exhibitions. In the late 1980s, Alternative Company was incorporated in Ufa; it was engaged in the development of minor architectural forms, environmental, interior and exterior D. of the public buildings in the cities of Bashkortostan. Between the late 20th — early 21st century, the work in the field of D. expands and acquires new content. In 2003, the Union of Designers was established in Bashkortostan.
