DUNGUR
694
DUNGUR, the Bashk. percussion folk mus. instrument. Narrow wooden shell covered with leather membrane on one side. There is a D. with a wide shell (usually with a handle), tightened with a membrane on both sides; some have pendants of double silver coins. The sound is mostly extracted by the blows of the hand, fingers, and more rarely – the wooden beater on the membrane or on the shell. Used for background accompaniment to folk dances and songs. Spread among many Turkic and other peoples.
