WOMEN'S MOVEMENT. Arose in Bashkortostan in the early 20th century. Between 1919—20, each canton has Women’s Departments under the Bashk. Obl. Committee of the RCP(b). In November 1926, the Bashkir Central Executive Committee established a Commission on improvement of women’s work and life and struggle against illiteracy and cultural and legal ignorance. The Central House of Workers in Ufa and Krasny Ugoloks (Red Corners, recreation and reading rooms) in villages were organized. In October 1927, the 1st Republican Congress of Female Workers and Peasants took place. In 1929, Women’s Departments were liquidated, their functions began to be performed by the Party organizations. In the 1930s, collectivization caused the rise of the W.M. in villages. During the Great Patriotic War, the women of the Republic replaced men, who had gone to the front. In 1941, the Anti Fascist Committee of the Soviet Women was created in the USSR. It’s purpose was to fight for peace and security of peoples (since 1956 The Soviet Women’s Committee; since 1991— The Russian Union of Women). In Bashkortostan, departments of the Committee were normally organized at the place of residence. Between 1950s 60s they were renamed into Zhensovety (Women’s Councils). In October 1971, a single governing body the Republican Women’s Council was established to coordinate the work of the BASSR city and raion Women’s Councils. In 1987, the Bashkortostan Republican Organization of Women was established (since 1994 the Union of Women of the RB). Women’s Councils actively participate in the social and cultural life of the Republic, provide assistance to large and young families, single mothers, elderly veterans, families in difficult life situations; carry out patronage on orphanages, difficult teenagers; conduct charity events, etc. Since the early 1990s, the following W.M. organizations are presented on the terr. of the RB: Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Ak Kalfak Association of Tat. Women, Bashkir Women Society, Front line Girlfriends Clubs, Mothers Against Drugs and Ryenata Ufa city public organizations of disabled women, etc.
