KARIM, Mustay [real name: Karimov Mustafa Safich; 20.10.1919, Derevnya Klyashevo of Ufim. Uyezd of the same name gub. (Chishminsky Raion of the RB) — 21.9.2005, Ufa]. People’s poet of the BASSR (1963). Merited Acad. of the AS RB (1992). Hero of Socialist Labour (1979). Merited Art Worker of the RSFSR (1982). Laureate of Lenin Award (1984), State Award of the USSR (1972), Stanislavsky State Award of the RSFSR (1967), Salavat Yulayev Award of the BASSR (1967), and Sholokhov Award (1999). Awarded with the Order of Lenin (1967, 1979), the Order of Patriotic War, 1st (1985) and 2nd (1945) Classes, Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1955, 1969), Order of Peoples’ Friendship (1984), Order of the Red Star (1944), Order of the Badge of Honour (1949), for Services to the Fatherland 2nd (2004) and 3rd (1995) Classes, and Salavat Yulayev Order (2003). Member of the Union of Writers of the RB. Participant in the Great Patriotic War. Graduated from the Timiryazev Bashkir Ped. Institute in 1941. Since 1938, Employee in the Pioneer newspaper in Ufa; between 1939—41, Literary Adviser at the Union of Writers of the BASSR. Since 1942, on the battle front. Between 1943—46, Reporter in the Za Chest Rodiny and Sovetsky Voin battle front newspapers. Between 1951—61, Chairman of the Board of the Union of Writers of the BASSR. Between 1962—89, Secretary of the Board of the RSFSR Union of Writers. Author of the following collections of poems: Spring Land (1951), Rivers Talk (1961), When Cranes Arrived (1964), etc. Short novels: Joy of Our House (1951), Taganok (1962), Very Long Childhood, Clemency (1984). Journalistic books: Facing the Rising Sun (1960), The Parable of the Three Brothers (1978) and Moments of Life (2002). K. wrote two dramas titled The Lonely Birch and The Unsung Song; two comedies titled The Abduction of a Girl and The Dis- mounted Makhmut; tragedies titled Salavat. Seven Dreams Through Reality, On the Night of the Lunar Eclipse, Don’t Throw Fire, Prometheus!, a farce Horse to the Dictator!, etc. The creative works of K. were translated into English, Bulgarian, Chinese, Lithuanian and many other languages of the world. A Deputy of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR of the 4—11 convocations, Member of the Committee of the Lenin and State Awards under the Council of Ministers of the USSR and Chairman of Bashkir Committee on protection of the world.
