KUMERTAU, a town and railway station in the RB. Located the S of Bashkir Urals, 237 km S of Ufa. Territory — 170 km2. Population — 64.1 thous. people (2017).

The economy is comprised of mechanical engineering. In K., there are the Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise, Bashkir Reinforcement Plant, Sandinsky Gypsum Processing Plant, OOO Bashkir Foundry Company, Furniture Factory, Bashkir Food Factory, Kumertau Production Company, etc. Kuibyshev Railway (Dyoma— Tyulgan Section) and Ufa—Orenburg Highway cross the territory. Since 2016, K. has been assigned the status of the Advanced Special Economic Zone.

In K., there are Kumertau Institute of Economics and Law, Aviation Technical University and Orenburg State University branches; Mining, and Ped. colleges; Aviation Technical School, branch of Sterlitamak Medical College, 14 general education schools, 18 pre‑school educational institutions, an orphanage, a children’s music, choreography, and arts schools, a youth’s sports school, a children’s art centre, centers for young naturalists; central hospital, Antituberculosis Hospital, a branch of the Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of AIDS and Infectious Diseases, Republican Rehabilitation Centre for Children and Adolescents with Disabilities; Cultural and Leisure Center with 2 clubs; 8 libraries, a local history museum, the Prometheus, Jubilee, and Miner sports centers, a church, 3 mosques, St. Sophia Church, Marfo‑Mariinsky Nunnery (Selo Ira), Ioanno‑Predtechensky (John the Baptist) Cathedral, and Mother of God Church (Selo Mayachny). In the town, there are 15 folk and 8 exemplary amateur art groups. The Kumertauskoye Vremya and The Yushatyr newspapers are published.

Founded in 1947 as Posyolok Babay due to the development of Babayevsky Brown Coal Deposits. Since 1949 Rabochy Posyolok K., since 1953 has its current status, between 1965—90 the capital of Kumertausky Raion. In K., there are some objects of cultural heritage: the building of the former Bashkirugol (Bashkir Coal) Administration (1961) and the Pokrovskaya (Intercession) Church (now Svyato‑Sofiysky Cathedral; built between 1914—16).
