KUMYS THERAPY

KUMYS THERAPY, a medical use of kumys. Kumys contains easily digested proteins, vitamins, microelements, unsaturated fatty acids and other substances that determine its therapeutic action. Bashkirs used Kumys in traditional medicine since olden times. In the middle of the 19th century the horse Kumys was recognized as the most effective medication for tuberculosis treatment, which promoted the development of kumys treatment and creation of kumyscure institutions and health resorts. The first Kumys‑cure institution started functioning in 1890 (ref. Aksakov Health Resort). In the early 20th century Bashkortostan becomes the leader in Kumys therapy research. The studies conducted in the Medical University allowed to determine content of vitamin C in summer and winter Kumys, study the effect of Kumys on human infectious agents, as well as effectiveness of Kumys in gastrointestinal diseases and various forms of tuberculosis, including the urinary tract tuberculosis. The composition of Kumys derived from dry horse milk has been studied, including its microelement content. The studies also revealed the immunomodulatory effect of Kumys in pulmonary diseases, as well as antioxidant and lipid lowering effect of Kumys for treatment and medical prevention. Kumys has an evident positive effect in rehabilitation of patients who underwent abdominal surgeries. In the republic K. is used in the Aksakov Health Resort, Glukhovskaya, Tolpar, Yumatovo health resorts, and other health retreat centers.
