MEDICINAL PLANTS

MEDICINAL PLANTS, the plants used in medicine and veterinary as therapeutic and preventive remedies. The therapeutic properties of M.p. are determined by biologically active substances in their composition, amount of which depends on species, age of the plant and conditions of the environment. There are about 100 M.p. species identified in the flora of the RB, which are used in the scientific medicine, and over 400 species, which are used in the traditional medicine. It’s wild growing M.p. that are mostly used as raw materials for medicinal purposes, but some species, such as chokeberry, calendula, etc, are specially cultivated for the same. More than 20 M.p. species, such as althea officinalis, foxfeet, anomalous peony, etc, are included in The Red List of the RB. The study of M.p. of the Republic started in the 1920s by A.Cherdantsev and A.E.Lind. Since the late 1920s the distribution of M.p. was studied by the Bashkir Complex Expedition. During the Great Patriotic War the geographical distribution of M.p. were determined by the scientists, evacuated to Ufa (V.I.Grubov, M.I.Kotov, etc), and the scientific team under the supervision of E.N.Klobukova‑Alisova. The pharmacologic properties were studied by I.A.Lerman. In 1950s, introduction, habitat and application fields studies were conducted by E.N.Klobukova‑Alisova in the Botanical Garden. The usage of more than 100 species was studied. Systematic studies of M.p. are conducted in the Bashkir State University, the Biology Institute, the Botanical Garden Institute, and the Medical University.
