MONASTERIES, communities of monks or nuns (in Buddhism, Russian Orthodoxy and Christianity), which adopt uniform rules of life (charter). Appeared in Russia in the 11th century. In the 1920s, M. were eliminated. From the beginning of the 1990s monasteries saw a revival.

In Ufa Uyezd, the first M. appeared in the late 1570s for male clergy. These include: the Sergiyev Monastery (destroyed about 1586), the Uspyensky (Assumption) Monastery (closed in 1920; both are located in Ufa), and the Voznesenskaya Pustyn (Ascension Monastery) on the Usolka River in the Kese‑Tabynskaya Volost (the modern Selo Kurorta, Gafuriysky Raion of the RB) of Nogay Doroga (Road), which was destroyed in 1863.

Now in the RB there are 9 M. These include: the Blagoveshchensk (Annunciation) Convent in Sterlitamak, the Mother of God Tabynsky Convent on the Holy Srings in Selo Kurorta of Gafuriysky Raion, the Uspyensky (Assumption) St. Georgiy (George) Monastery in Selo Usa‑Stepanovka of the Blagoveshchensky Raion, the Pokrovsky (Intercession of the Virgin) Monastery in Selo Novomikhaylovka of the Fedorovsky Raion, the Marfo‑Mariinsky Convent in Selo Ira of the Kuyurgazinsky Raion, the Tikhvin Mother of God Convent in Posyolok Priyutovo of Belebeevsky Raion, the Odigitrievsky Mother of God Convent in Selo Bugabashevo of Belebeevsky Raion, the Prorok (Prophet) Ilya Monastery in Selo Mesyagutovo of Duvansky Raion and Svyato‑Troitsky (Holy Trinity) Convent in Birsk.
