MURTAZIN-IMANSKY (Murtazin), Valiulla Gainazarovich [5.1.1885, Derevnya Imangulovo 1st of Orenburgsky Uyezd of Orenburg Gub. (Oktyabrsky Raion of Orenburg Obl.) — 10.7.1938, Ufa), Actor, Stage Director, Theatrical Figure. People’s Artist of the BASSR (1922), Merited Artist of the RSFSR (1935). Since 1907, he worked as an Actor and a Stage Dir. of various theatrical troupes of Orenburg; between 1919—37 — Artistic Managing Dir. at BSAT, simultaneously Head of the Directorate for Management of Entertainment Establishments of the People’s Commissari‑at for Education of the BASSR, the Deputy Head and Head of the Committee for Arts Affairs at the Sovnarkom of the BASSR, between 1926—37 — a teacher at the Bashkir Technical School of Arts. An outstanding figure of the Bashkir and Tatar theatrical art. He was the founder, the first director and the artistic managing director of the Bashkir Drama Theatre. He possessed a great stage temperament and rare plasticity. His early roles are characterized by high spirituality, bright emotionality, and civic pathetics; his late roles — by psychological depth and realism of interpretation. In the M.‑I.’s directing works during the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War, the social‑condemning trend and the pathos of national revival are brightly expressed; between the 20—30s, he turned to the so‑called industrial drama. In 1937, he was subjected to political purges and executed by shooting. Rehabilitated in 1957.
