SHEEP BREEDING

SHEEP BREEDING, a branch of livestock breeding. In Bashkortostan, sheep (mostly, coarse‑wool sheep) have been bred since olden times; early in the 19th century, fine wool sheep of Merino breed were imported. In 2018, the total number of sheep in all categories of entities reached 719.6 thous.: agricultural businesses (thous.) — 17.1, peasant (farmer) farms — 93.7, homesteads — 615.7. On homesteads, mostly coarse‑wool and semicoarse‑wool sheep are bred. Nucleus farms, breeding sheep of Romanov breed (OOO Zolotoye Runo in Burayevsky Raion), and Volgograd breed (OOO Mayak in Zianchurinsky Raion) function in the Republic. Semifine-wool sheep and North Caucasus meat and wool sheep are bred on homesteads in Blagovarsky, Tuymazinsky, and Ufimsky raions). Coarse‑wool sheep of Romanov breed — in Sharansky, Tuymazinsky, and Uchalinsky raions.
