PALLAS, Pyotr Simon (22.9.1741, Berlin — 8.9.1811, ibid.), Naturalist, Geographer, Traveller. Dr.Sci (Medicine, 1759). Member of the Royal Council of London (1764), Acad. of the Imperial Academy of Sciences and Arts (1767). Studied in Germany, Holland, and Great Britain. Between 1767—1810, he lived in Russia. Leader of Academic expeditions of 1768—74 to the south-eastern regions of Russia. During the expedition, he studied the structure of the Ural Mountains, flora and fauna; economy, traditional occupations and ethnography of Bashkirs. P. described Yangantau Mountain for the first time.
