RUSSIANS (self‑identified as Russians), people, the dominant population of Russia. There lived 1,432.9 thous. Russians in the RB in 2010. R. comprised more than half of the population of Beloretsk, Birsk, Blagoveshchensk, Ishimbay, Kumertau, Mezhgorye, and Salavat. In the rural areas R. mostly live in Ufim. (30 thous. people), Duvan (19.6 thous.), Iglinsky (18.9 thous.), Belebeevsky (18.1 thous.), Beloretsky (16.2 thous.), Sterlitamaksky (14.3 thous.), Tuimazinsky (13,000), Chishminsky (10,400), Meleuzovsky (10,200), and other raions of the RB. Mass resettlement of R. to the territory of the region began after accession of Bashkortostan to Russia. Initially R. settled in the central part of Bashkortostan, developing the land around Ufa, then – in the North.‑West., along the Zakamskaya line. The next stage of the resettlement movement began after the construction of the Orenb. line and the foundation of the city of Orenburg. The influx of Russian immigrants mainly from the Middle Volga region, central and southern regions of Russia increased in the 2nd half of the 18th century due to the development of mining industry, after Peasant Reform of 1861 and during Stolypin agrarian reform.

  1. were mostly involved in agriculture, but they also bred cattle and persued household trades. The main types of settlements of R. were villages, farms, and others. The settlement layout was linear. Rus. manors had primarily closed layout. They consisted of a house, a yard with a few outdoor facilities, and a garden. The traditional cuisine of R. was mostly based on cereals and vegetables. Christmas, Baptism, Maslenitsa, Easter, Trinity and other Orthodox holidays were celebrated by R.

There are such public organisations as the Assemblyof Russiansof Bashkortostan, such Historical and Cultural Centres as Aksakovsky, Krasny Yar, St. Nicholas Church, the Literary Centre Tsvetaevsky.
