RUSSOJAPANESE WAR OF 1904—05, a war for the division of spheres of influence in the NE China and Korea. The Russian Army in the Far East included the 214th Mokshansky (Commander — Colonel P.P.Pobyvanets), 242nd Belebeyevsky (Colonel Vorobyov), 243rd Zlatoustovsky (Colonel Ogloblev), 282nd Chernoyarsky (colonels I.N.Tikhanov and A.S.Polyansky) Infantry Regiments, Orenburg Cossack Division (Major General V.P. Grekov; consisting of 2 Orenburg and 2 Ural Cossack regiments), 1st (Colonel Nikolayev) and 10th Orenburg cossack regiments, Orenburg Cossack Troops Cavalry and Artillery Brigade (11th and 20th Cavalry and Artillery Batteries). The troops of the garrison, which defended the Port‑Arthur Fortress (between May—December 1904), included the 4th (Lieutenant General A.V.Fok) and 7th (Major General R.I.Kondratenko) Vostochno‑Sibirskaya (Eastern Siberia) shooting divisions, staffed mainly by military servicemen from Ufa Guberniya. Military formations from Bashkortostan participated in July in the battle near Derevnya Tashichao, in July— September — under Derevnya Vafangou and on the Shakhe River, in August — near Derevnya Lyaoyan, in January 1905 — near Derevnya Sandepu, in February — near Mukden (all — in Manchuria). All participants of the war were awarded commemorative medals of the Japanese War of 1904—1905.
