SALAVAT YULAYEV
SALAVAT YULAYEV, a feature film. Made in 1941 at the Soyuzdetfilm Film Studio (script by S.P.Zlobin and G.S.Spevak, directed by Y.A.Protazanov, operations by A.V.Shelenkov, composerby A.I.Khachaturian). The cast: A.K.Mubaryakov (Salavat), M.P. Bolduman (Ye.I.Pugachev), N.A.Kryuchkov (Khlopusha), M.Gluzsky (Abdurakhman), N.Fedotova (Amina), and the actors of the Bashkir Drama theatre: H.G.Bukharsky, A.F.Zubairov, G.M.Mingazhev, S.N.Saitov, R.S.Syrtlanov and others. Filming took place in Moscow, as well as in the environs of Ufa and the Makarovsky Raion of the BASSR (now Ishimbaysky Raion of the RB). The theme of the film is the struggle of the Bashkirs for social and national justice under the leadership of Salavat Yulaev (ref. Peasant War of 1773–75). The unique appearance, as well as expressive mimicry, and the rich in intonations voice helped Mubaryakov to express the heroic character of Salavat. In the picture there are many scenes quite significant in their artistic power: the meeting of Salavat with Pugachev, the battle of the Bashkir soldiers with the army of I.I. Michelson, the flight of Salavat, etc. Despite the inaccuracies in the display of some historic events, S.Yu. is considered to be one of the best cinematographic works.
