SVYATOSERGEYEVSKY (ST. SERGIUS’) CATHEDRAL. Located in Ufa. The Cathedral was built in 1868 as a stone church on the site of a former wooden church structure, that had been destroyed in the fire of 1774. Bishop Philaret consecrated this church in honour of St. Sergius of Radonezh. In 1933, it acquired a status of cathedral. The Cathedral was originally designed as a wooden and single domed church with a three‑tier Bell Tower with six bells and a forged fence on brick pillars. It was a rectangular building. Many icons, a gilded iconostasis, and behind the choir, icon‑cases were designed by F.M.Troitsky. Two icons depicting Sergius of Radonezh were drawn by M.V.Nesterov. In 1894, an iconostasis was made with donations from the Merchant, F.E.Chizhov. In the cathedral there were icons with particles of the relics of the saints and the relics of Moses (since 2002). There was an altar dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh, which was consecrated in 1868. In the Cathedral, there is a brick chapel. The Transfiguration Cemetery Church was forms part of the cathedral grounds. Between 1937–42, no services were held. Since 2000, on Trinity Sunday, a procession around Ufa has been held annually. The procession starts at the Cathedral. The Cathedral building is a monument of historical and architectural interest.
