PLANT SELECTION, the breeding of plant varieties and hybrids; a branch of agronomy. The main direction is to increase yield, quality of products, resistance to frost, drought, salt, disease, pests and herbicides, ecologic plasticity, responsiveness to fertilizers, etc. Since the beginning of the 20th century the P.s was developing by selecting the best individual plants for subsequent reproduction. In 1926, the work in the field of selection of field agricultural crops was started at the newly established department at the Chishmisnkaya Agricultural Experimental Station (ref. Chishminsky Horticultural Selection Centre) and Toporninsky Pomological Base (ref. Kushnarenkovsky Selection Centre for Fruit and Berry Crops and Vine). Scientific research of P.s. is conducted in the Agricultural University, Botanical Garden Institute, Forest Experimental Station, Birsk Experimental Field. A significant contribution to the development of P.s. in Bashkortostan was made by S.A. Kunakbaev, G.A.Mansurov, L.N.Sterlyaeva, V.Kh.Khangildin and others.
