TUKAY (also transliterated as Tukayev) Gabdulla Mukhamedgarifovich (according to other data, Mukhammetgarifovich; 14.4.1886 in Derevnya Koshlauch, Kazan Gub. – 2.4.1913 in Kazan) was a Tat. poet and publicist. Such creative works as “Word to Friends”, “On Freedom” (both – in 1905; in the Tat. language); “Hay Bazaar, or New Kisekbash”; “Ishan” (both – in 1908); “Dacha” (1911); “Oh, a Pen!” (1906); “Poet” (1908) and others are permeated with the spirit of glorification and defense of democratic ideals and spiritual life of the people, as well as accusation of autocracy. Author of children’s collections of poems, including Pearls (1909), Soul of Children, Fun Pages (both – in 1910), Miyaubike (1911), etc. The originality of the Bashkir songs is described in the lecture titled Folk Literature (1910; in the Tat. language). In the spring of 1912, he came to Ufa, where he met M.Gafuri. The Puppet Theatre, the Opera and Ballet Theatre and other theatres of the Republic staged performances based on the T.’s creative works.
