UKHSAY, Yakov Gavrilovich [26.11.1911, Selo Slakbash of Belebeyevsky Uyezd of Ufa Gub. (now Belebeyevsky Raion of the RB) – 7.7.1986, Cheboksary, buried in his homeland], Poet. People’s Poet of the Chuvash ASSR (1950). Merited Art Worker of the Chuvash ASSR (1945). Laureate of RSFSR State Award named after M.Gorky (1972) and State Award named after Ivanov of the Chuvash ASSR (1971). Awarded with the Order of Lenin (1981), Order of the October Revolution (1971), the 1st and 2nd Class Order of the Patriotic War (1943, 1944), Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1961), Order of the Badge of Honour (1950). Member of the Union of Writers of the BASSR. Participant in the Great Patriotic War. Studied at Bashkir Ped. Institute named after K.A.Timiryazev (1928–30, MSU (1930–33). In the 1930s, he worked in the Kommunar newspaper (Moscow). Since 1933 – in the newspapers of Bizhbulyakskaya and Priyutovskaya MTS. Between 1935–36 – in the Bashkir Institute of Language and Literature. Since 1940, he lived in Cheboksary. Author of the following collections of poems: Book of Joy, Fiery Language, Motherland (1959), etc. Also, worked in the field of children’s literature (poetic tales Ivan Zapechny, Guslyar and the Bear, etc) and literary criticism. Such narrative poems as On top of the Gusly Mountain (1963), Meeting with Chapaev (1967) and others are dedicated to the events of the Revolution of 1917 in Bashkortostan and the native nature’s beauty. G.Amiri, Kh.Nazar et al. translated the U.’s poems into the Bashkir language. Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Chuvash ASSR of the 5th convocation.
