CENTRAL SPIRITUAL ADMINISTRATION OF MUSLIMS OF RUSSIA, a religious organization, uniting both religious groups and regional organizations. Located in Ufa. The main activities include the implementation of the (human) rights to freedom of confession of Islam; the spread of Muslim dogma; the development of spiritual education; the organization of pilgrimage, or hajj, to the Muslims holy places; the creation of Islamic cultural centers, etc. The supreme body is the Majlis (Assembly), in the period between congresses – the Presidium of the Central Muslim Spiritual Board, the Council of Muftis, and the Council of Ulemas. Created as the Orenburg Muslim Spiritual Assembly. From 1917 it’s official name was the Central Muslim Spiritual Board of Inner Russia and Siberia (until 1918 as a religious department it was part of the National Muslim Board, which was the central executive body of the National Assembly of Muslims of Turkic and Tatar Origin from the Inner parts of Russia and Siberia). From 1948, it was renamed with Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the European part of the USSR and Siberia. In 1992, it was newly renamed as the Central Muslim Spiritual Board of Russia, the EU and the CIS. In 2000, the institution received its modern name. The Russian Islamic University is an institution under the Central Muslim Spiritual Board. It publishes the Muslim Calendar and the Maglyumat al‑Bulgar –Vestnik (Messenger) newspaper.
