SHALGYZ-YIRAU

SHALGYZ-YIRAU, Shalgyiyz‑Yiray, Shalgyiyz Telensi Uly, poet‑improviser. No documented information about him has been preserved. According to a number of researchers, he was born in 1465 on the left bank of the Yaik River. While taking part in military campaigns, he visited the Crimea, the North Caucasus, and the valleys of the River Don. Died ca. 1560. G.B.Khusainov believes that the poet was among the Bashkirs, together with the Nogay, left the terr. of South Urals and PreUrals. Leaving his homeland, Yirau created a kubair Where is Idel, There is the Homeland. The total amount of works which have been reached up to the present time comprises over 600 lines of poetry. Records of his improvisations found in Bashkortostan, are kept in the collection of arabographic manuscripts and old‑printed books at the Institute of History, Language and Literature in the literary fund named after G.B.Husainov. The creative works of Sh.‑y. are a common property of the Bashkir, Kazakh, Karakalpak, and Nogay peoples.
