SHMAREV, Alexey Tikhonovich (18.1.1913, Sloboda Nalchik of Terskaya Obl. – 2.6.1993, Moscow), Statesman, Industrialist. Dr. of Engineering Science (1966). Merited Oil Producer of the TASSR (1983), Merited Oil Producer of the USSR (1987), Merited Explorationist of the USSR (1983). Laureate of the Stalin (1950), Lenin (1962) awards. Awarded with the Order of Lenin (1948, 1956), Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1942, 1950, 1963, 1968, 1971), Order of Peoples’ Friendship (1981), Order of the Badge of Honour (1944). After graduating from the Grozny Oil Institute (1938), he worked at Ishimbayneft Trust, since 1941 and since 1948 the Manager of Tuymazaneft Trust, since 1943 – Bashnefterazvedka (Sterlitamak), since 1944 – Ishimbayneft, since 1945 Deputy Head of Bashneft Association. Since 1950, he worked at Tatneft Production Group (Bugulma), since 1956 Head of General Administration of Gas Industry of the USSR, since 1957 Chairman of the Tatarstan Council of National Economy, since 1960 1st Deputy Chairman of the RSFSR Council of National Economy, since 1962 Chairman of Sredne‑Volzhsky Council of National Economy, between 1965–77 the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Geology of the RSFSR. Under the leadership of Sh., new methods and techniques of drilling and oil production were introduced at the oil fields of the Republic. In Bugulma a monument to Sh. was erected, a street was named after him.
