ASHMARIN Nikolay Ivanovich (22.9. 1870–26.8.1933), linguist. Doctor of Turkology (1925). Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1929). The founder of Chuvash linguistics. His research is devoted to the comparative study of Turkic languages, the theory of gesture imitation in the Chuvash linguistics. Author of the 17volume “Dictionary of the Chuvash language” (Kazan–Cheboksary, 1910–1950). Author and compiler of “Collection of Chuvash songs recorded in the provinces of Kazan, Simbirsk, and Ufa” (Kazan, 1900), “Collection of Chuvash Proverbs” (Cheboksary, 1925), etc.
