BAKSES, bagymsas, cult minister (priest). As a rule, he had special psychophysiological abilities (clairvoyance, healing etc.) and poetic imaginary thinking. These abilities were features of Mari koraza, Udmurt tuno, usto tunochi, Chuvash yomzya, Slavic volkhv, vedun, etc. B. held kamlaniye singing rituals to make hunting successful, calm the weather, cure ill people, etc.; was able to cast spells (see Shamanism). Rural healers were also called B. until the 1st quarter of the 20th c.
