ZALIFAKAY
“ZALIFAKAY”, “Z a l i f a”, a Bashkir ethnic song, uzun-kuy. The poetic lyrics and the legend were first registered by A. Yarmukhametov in 1925 in the Dengizbayevo village, Samarskaya District (Samarkiy region). It is published in the “Bashkort aymagy” collection (1929, № 7), the melody and the lyrics were published by M.M. Valeev in the 1930’s. The melody is published in “Baskkort khalk yirdary”. The song is lyrical. It tells about Zalifa’s destiny. She was forced to marry the person she did not love. The chant of “Z.” is based on the intonation and beat variations of the overture musical phrase. It imitates the intonation of a halffilled quarter and the upper melodical mode is to be sung. The melody of “Z.” is hardly ornamented and the range of sounds fits in an octave. It makes the song more dramatic.
