MARI ETHNIC SONG

MARI ETHNIC SONG of the republic can be divided into chastushkas, ceremonial songs, etc. The collection published by Finnish scientist A. Genetz (in 1887 and 1895, the 2nd collection was published by Finnish scientist V. Porkk) includes more than 100 songs of Maris from the east of the republic. In 1908 the collection by A.Aprtiyev called “Collection of Cheremis song registered in different settlements of Birskiy and Sarapulskiy districts in 1905-1907” appeared. [Apparently, he was from Babayevo village, Birskiy district (Kaltaclanskiy district)] It contains more than 150 songs of Maris from the east of republic. The book was translated into Russian by V.M. Vasilyev. The samples of Mari E.s. are also included into the Mari calendar (1907-13) published by Vasilyev too. He had been collecting songs of Maris from the east of republic since 1902 and published them in 3 books about the Mari E.s. Mari researcher G.G. Karmazin registered 500 songs in Mishkinskaya and Churayevskaya counties of Birskiy district, part of them was included into the book of Finnish scientist Wichmann in 1931. A collection including more than 300 folklore songs (with notes) of Eastern and field Maris registered by Vasilyev in 1900-19 was published in Kazan in 1919. In 1941 musician and composer K.A. Smirnov published the collection of Mari songs that he had registered during his expeditions in the late 1930’s (including the expeditions to Mishkinsky and Kaltasinskiy districts, BASSR) with Mari Scientific-Research Institute of Social Culture (Yoshkar-Ola). “Songs of Eastern Mari” collection was published in 1951. L.A. Abukayeva published “Wedding songs of Maris from Mishkinsky district” in 2009. In the 1990’s Mari Scientific-Research Institute of language, literature and history organized expeditions to different districts of RB. The data collected during these expeditions was included into “Songs of Eastern Maris” collection.
