SOCIETY OF STUDYING BASHKIRIA

SOCIETY OF STUDYING BASHKIRIA was founded in Sterlitamak by the decree of CEC ASBR of February 16, 1922 as a Society of studying households, culture and history of Bashkiria at PC for education. In September of 1922 it merged with the Society for the study of the South Urals, moved to Ufa and was renamed the Society of studying Bashkiria. Closed in 1932. It consisted of 5 departments: historical, scientific philological, ethnical-geographical, publishing, anti-religious. The activities were managed by the council of the Society, in order to discuss large scientific and organizational issues the Board would call for. The society studied natural resources, history and ethnography of Bashkirs and other peoples of these lands; it also founded libraries and museums, participated in expeditions, etc. G.F. Vildanov, K.G. Gabitov, G.I. Komissarov, P.A. Petrov-Turinge, etc. worked in the S.s.B. Its honored members were V.V. Bartold, Mazhit Gafuri, A.A. Divayev, S.I. Rudenko, etc. The society used to publish the “Bashkir collection of local history”, “Bashkort aymagy” journal, which contained folklore, ethnographic materials, etc.
