PETROV DAY

PETROV DAY is a religious day for Slavic people and the summer holiday in honor of apostles Peter and Paul of the Orthodox. It is celebrated annually on July 12. According to belief, it was considered to be the zenith of summer. People did not collect herds, wreaths, etc. after P.d. Some agricultural calendar tasks were timed to P.d.: weeding of plants, preparing for the hay-maclang and first plowing; spring-summer youth games and round dances were over: e.g. Chuvash men and girls used to sing farewell songs for round dances. People from certain settlements used to gather on the outskirts of their village and arrange the farewell of uyav (asatnya). In order to mark the beginning of haymaclang people used to make a sacrifice, killing a ram, cooclang bouillon and sharing it with their relatives and neighbors. P.d. is a family holiday now.
