SALTYKOV Ivan Vasilyevich
SALTYKOV Ivan Vasilyevich (1897, according to other data, 1893–May 1986), musicologist, folklorist, music and public figure. Author of more than 20 Bashkir folk songs for voice and piano, soloist, choir, and symphony orchestra (“Irendyk”, “Kagarman-Canton”, “Salavat”, “Tashtugay”, etc). S. recorded and notated many works of Bashkir musical folklore, including 88 songs and tunes that were included in the manuscript collection “Bashkir melodies” (late 1920s). One of the first organizers and leaders of folklore expe ditions in Bashkiria, Chelyabinskaya and Sverdlovskaya oblasts (regions) of the Russian Federation (1926–31); the materials from these expeditions were included in the work “History and analysis of Bashkir folk songs” (unfinished). S. also studied Chuvash folklore. By 1935, together with composers G.S. Almukhametov, S.H. Gabyashi, and A.S. Klyucharev, S. re corded about 1,000 Bashkir, 500 Tatar, and 200 Chuvash songs. Chairman of the art history section of the Society for the Study of Bashkiria (1928–32).
