UNESCO, an intergovernmental organization. Founded in 1945. The headquarters is located in Paris. It incorporates 193 member-states (2019), including the Russian Federation (1954). Main areas of activity: research in the field of education, science, culture and communications; knowledge exchange; preparation and adoption of international acts and binding recommendations; provision of expert services to member-states to determine their policies when developing projects, etc.

Since 1998, the RB Committee for UNESCO has been operating in Bashkortostan. International projects “UNESCO Associated schools” are being implemented (since 2000). UNESCO participates in the promotion and protection of the intangible cultural heritage of Bashkirs and other ethnicities of Bashkortostan: research-to-practice conference “Ural-Batyr” and the spiritual heritage of the peoples of the world “(2010), all-Russian research-topractice conference “Natural and cultural heritage of the Southern Urals as an innovative resource” (2009), “Festival of the world’s epics: 5 nations – 5 cultures” (2015), the event “In the footsteps of the Bashkir legends” (2016; Ufa), the first zonal festival “Epics of the peoples of the world” among educational institutions of the districts and cities of the Urals with the participation of UNESCO Associated schools and UNESCO clubs of friends of the RB (2017; Zilair village, Zilair district), Russian festival “Bashkir mosaic” (2018; Pribelskaya village, Karmaskaly district), etc.. Since 2010 the international contest of young storytellers and performers of the Bashkir folk epic “Ural-Batyr” has been held annually in Bashkir and other languages of the world. RB delegations took part in the 5th World Congress of the World Federation of Associations and Clubs of UNESCO (Yekaterinburg, 1999), the international festival “Ode to Peace” (Penglai, China, 2007), etc.. UNESCO clubs operate in cities and districts and educational institutions of the region.
