ALLOPLANT
ALLOPLANT, a graft composed of collagenous animal and human tissues. This graft was developed at the AllRussian Eye and Plastic Surgery Centre under the guidance of E.R.Muldashev. In 1987 it was recommended for clinical use by the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR. The starting materials for A. are ligaments, dura mater and fascias, bones, etc. A. is composed of collagen, glycosaminoglycans (proteoglycans), lipids and water. It is used in ophthalmology, maxillofacial, plastic, chest surgery, traumatology, hepatic surgery and other fields. The material is non-toxic, possesses mild antigenic properties, provides recipient tissues directed growth and does not cause scarification in the area of transplantation. After surgery the A. is replaced by the recipients own tissue (the regenerate), the properties of the regenerate may be regulated by selection of adequate A. type. A. grafts are used in more than 500 clinics of the RB, RF, CIS countries and the countries outside the former Soviet Union.
