AUL
AUL, a typical settlement of the Turkic, Mongolian and some of the Caucasus peoples. Among the Bashkirs, who had a nomadic lifestyle, it initially was a temporary settlement of a clan at the place of a nomad camp. The mass appearance of A. is related to accession of Bashkortostan to Russia. In 1843, the administration of the Orenburg Gub. adopted a plan of the reorganization of A. By the middle of the 19th century there were about 1800 A. Full information about A. was collected during the 5th inspection. In the 20th century, large A. became administrative and economic centres of cantons, adm. districts, village councils. Some of them turned into cities (Davlekanovo, Yanaul, etc). Ref.
