BASHKIRS: EXPERIENCE OF ETHNOLOGICAL MONOGRAPH, monograph by S.I.Rudenko. The work was written based on the materials from ethnographic expedition of 1905—08, published sources and literature. It consists of 2 parts. Part 1 (The Physical type of Bashkirs //Notes of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. Vol.43. Issue 1. Pg., 1916) provides a description of the ethnic history of Bashkirs. Having summarized the results of the anthropological study of approx. 2.3 thous. people, the author provided a general characteristic of the anthropological type of the Bashkir people. Part 2 (Everyday Life of Bashkirs//Notes of the Russian Geographical Society. Vol.43. Issue 2. L., 1925) provides a detailed description of the forms of economy, material and spiritual culture of the Bashkirs at the turn of the 19—20th centuries. In the territory of Bashkirs settlement, the author identified 4 ethnic areas: Eastern (Trans-Urals and southern steppes with adjacent foothills), Mountain (central part of the South Urals), South-Western (steppes to the SW of Ufa) and Northern (territory to the N of Ufa and to the W of the Ural Mountains). For the first time an attempt was made to draw up a map of the settlement of Bashkir tribes and families; a table of Bashkir tribal organization was compiled; a conclusion was made on the leading role of the Turkic component in the formation of the Bashkir ethnos and culture. Decorative-applied art, Bashkir costume and Bashkir cuisine, etc were described in detail. The book contains maps and many illustrations.
