BASHKORD
BASHKORD, Khan of the Don Kipchaks. Participated in feuds of Russian knyazs. In 1151, near the Rut River the allied troops of B., knyazs Yury Dolgoruky, Vladimir and Izyaslav Davydovich suffered defeat from the army of the Great Kiev Knyaz Izyaslav Mstislavich. Between 1160—62, B. together with Izyaslav Davydovich waged a war against the Great Kiev Knyaz Rostislav Mstislavich, held raids on Belgorod, Kiev and Smolensk. Between 1160—70s, B. protected DeshtiKipchak (the Cuman Kipchak Confederation) from invasions of Russian knyazs. In 1184, B. was captured by the troops of the Great Kiev Knyaz Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich and other knyazs, later released for ransom. The name of B. testifies to the fact that in the tribal system of the Don Kipchaks there were tribal associations of Bashkirs. Another evidence of this is provided by the Shezhere of the Bashkir tribe Kypsak which describes the stay of their ancestors in the Azov region.
