BOLSHAYA BASHKIRIYA

BOLSHAYA BASHKIRIYA (the larger Bashkiriya; Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) is the Autonomous Bashkir Republic, formed after the Ufa Gub. territory became part of it. It was formed in 1922 by the Presidium of the Bashkir Central Executive Committee and the Bashkortostan Regional Committee of the RCP(b)’s decision On the Need of Ufa Guberniya to Access the Autonomous Soviet Bashkir Republic (ASBR), approved by the People’s Commissariat for Nationalities’ Affairs. B.B. included the Malaya Bashkiriya (without the Tok­Churansky and Yalansky cantons of the ASBR), Belebeyevsky, Birsky and Ufa ueyzds of Ufa Guberniya. On the Resolution of the BASSR Central Executive Committee of October 5th 1922, the Republic’s territory was divided into Argayashsky, Belebeyevsky, Birsky, Zilairsky, Mesyagutovsky, Sterli­tamaksky, Tamyan-­Kataysky and Ufimsky cantons. The borders of B.B. were estab­ lished by decrees of All­-Russian Central Executive Committee issued between 1923—29. With the formation of B.B. the Repub­ lic’s territory increased up to 156 thous. km2, while its population increased up to 3022 thous. people. Within the Republic, up to 87% of the Bashkirs were united (1922) while the Bashkir National Movement’s main provisions regarding the territorial frame­ work and the administrative system of the Autonomous Bashkortostan were implemented. The name B.B. was used before the adoption of the Resolution On liquidation of Administrative Cantons and Volosts Division in the Bashkir ASSR and on the Establishment of Administrative Raions Division and the Transition to Raion System of August 20th 1930 (ref.
